If it’s culture and history you want a visit to Mallorca will definitely not disappoint. With Mallorca’s long history you can will have plenty of historical places and monuments to visit. Starting from the very old Talaiots, which are huge and numerous dwelling places built by the early dwellers of this island, you will surely be transported back in time as you ponder upon the enigma left by the prehistoric Talayotic culture.
A visit to the olive groves of Mallorca will then remind you of the legacy left by the Romans while a visit to the courtyards at Palma will give you a glimpse of the changes in architectural styles from the 15th century to the 20th century itself. The courtyard transitions form the early Catalan Gothic style, to Rennaissance, to Baroque, to neo-Gothic, and finally to the modern style where courtyards disappeared in favour of a roofed area with skylights.
A visit to several or even just one sanctuary, hermitage, oratory, or castle will of course give you a taste of both culture and history. A favorite tour among tourists is a trip to the first railway line in Mallorca, which was first officially opened in 1875. From the original line from Palma to Inca other routes were eventually opened and closed due to financial setbacks. Now the railway is under operation again and even the abandoned lines are in use due to the increased demand for public transportation. Art lovers need only visit the numerous museums, old buildings, churches, cathedrals and the famous Arab Baths to have their fill of art and beauty.
There is no better way than to immerse one’s self in Mallorca’s culture than by visiting the island during a festivals or fiestas. One doesn’t really have to wait for the big festivals since there’s a fiesta in some part of Mallorca almost every month. Some celebrations are of course more interesting and colorful than some although most of them are religious in nature.
